Student Pugwash USA began in 1979 in the image of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, bringing together students with expert speakers on ethical issues in science and technology. In 1983, students attending one of these conferences started our chapter network of students across the country, bringing these issues and topics to their wider campus communities. Tens of thousands of students and members of the general public have been members of our chapters and attendees of our events.
In 2020, we expanded on this legacy by creating our general membership programs for Student Pugwash and the Rotblat Society. which allow for individual members anywhere to become involved in local and national activities, organizing in person and online. We encourage members to organize into chapters and hold conferences as they wish, but with our new infrastructure that is no longer necessary to be involved.
We are currently in progress on digitizing our extensive archives for publication here. If you are an alumnus with any Pugwash materials from your time as a student—well, first of all, we hope you join the Rotblat Society—please get in touch as we'd love to have copies of your memorabilia.
